The religious writings of Henry P. Wieler were recorded during the troubling years of 1916-18 in Russia. His life as a father and teacher was difficult and he turned to his journals as a way of asserting his spiritual beliefs. His thoughts and religious experiences relating sermons, biblical passages and church events are revealing as are his descriptions of the times and struggles of his people, the Volga-Germans, who are known as The Quiet in the Land. Translated from the original German scripted writings, in the actual journals we have attempted to share some excerpts which directly relate Henry's religious experiences during the critical periods of transition in Russia. The events of World War I put the Volga-Germans in a difficult way with their Russian neighbours. Wieler was fearful for his family and fellow Germans living in their Volga communities. Christian faith helped him to deal with those times and he fortunately recorded his faith reflections for us to appreciate. Many more pages remain to be translated from the over 1500 pages written by Henry from 1912-1924. Success from this publication would provide incentives to offer more of the journal writings of Henry Wieler in the future.

Controversies regarding the authorship of the Letter of James, the date of its composition, its addressees and, when compared to other biblical writings, similarities and differences on lexical, semantic and theological levels generated debates concerning its literary genre, coherence, its associations with other texts as well as intertextual strategies. This structural commentary is part of this discussion. What is emphasized in the commentary is not the issue of justification and the relationship between deeds and faith but the sapiential character of the Letter of James. The new analytical approach has become possible due to an innovative view of the structure of the letter. The authors propose a structure organized around the catalogue of attributes of wisdom enumerated in James 3:17. The second important value of this study is its ecumenical (Catholic-Lutheran) dimension.

Normally, we hear the call and the command to come in out of the rain. This devotional is an invitation and an incentive to get out in the rain to get drenched with these drops of devotions. Rain is not from the sea, but from the sky. Rain is not drawn from the faucet into the sink, but it falls from the sky. Rain is not from the ground, but from God. These raindrop devotionals are written to wet you with the Word, soak you with the Scripture, and mizzle you with the message. These raindrops are relevant, revealing, and reaching. So, let down your umbrella and let this rain drop in your walk, work, witness, worship, and week.

Invoking the biblical motif of Jacob's struggle with the Face of God (Genesis 32), Simon D. Podmore undertakes a constructive theological account of 'spiritual trial' (tentatio; known in German mystical and Lutheran tradition as Anfechtung) in relation to enduring questions of the otherness and hiddenness of God and the self, the problem of suffering and evil, the freedom of Spirit, and the anxious relationship between temptation and ordeal, fear and desire. This book traces a genealogy of spiritual trial from medieval German mystical theology, through Lutheran and Pietistic thought (Tauler; Luther; Arndt; Boehme), and reconstructs Kierkegaard's innovative yet under-examined recovery of the category (AnfAegtelse: a Danish cognate for Anfechtung) within the modern context of the 'spiritless' decline of Christendom. Developing the relationship between struggle (Anfechtung) and release (Gelassenheit), Podmore proposes a Kierkegaardian theology of spiritual trial which elaborates the kenosis of the self before God in terms of Spirit's restless longing to rest transparently in God. Offering an original rehabilitation of the temptation of spiritual trial, this book strives for a renewed theological hermeneutic which speaks to the enduring human struggle to realise the unchanging love of God in the face of spiritual darkness.
