In the summer of 1933 in Lawton, Oklahoma, a team of six anthropologists met with eighteen Comanche elders to record the latter?s reminiscences of traditional Comanche culture. The depth and breadth of what the elderly Comanches recalled provides an inestimable source of knowledge for generations to come, both within and beyond the Comanche community. This monumental volume makes available for the first time the largest archive of traditional cultural information on Comanches ever gathered by American anthropologists. Much of the Comanches? earlier world is presented here?religious stories, historical accounts, autobiographical remembrances, cosmology, the practice of war, everyday games, birth rituals, funerals, kinship relations, the organization of camps, material culture, and relations with other tribes. Thomas W. Kavanagh tracked down all known surviving notes from the Santa Fe Laboratory field party and collated and annotated the records, learning as much as possible about the Comanche elders who spoke with the anthropologists and, when possible, attributing pieces of information to the appropriate elders. In addition, this volume includes Robert H. Lowie?s notes from his short 1912 visit to the Comanches. The result stands as a legacy for both Comanches and those interested in learning more about them.

A.C. Greene considered The Comanche Barrier to South Plains Settlement an instant choice to be included in his book, The Fifty Best Books on Texas. The book details both sides of the tragic Council House Fight of 1840, the Battle of Adobe Walls, and the reluctance of the Comanches to accept Texas overtures to peace. Originally published in 1933, this edition includes 11,000 words that were left out of the original version. The author tells the story of one of the most feared Indian tribes from both the perspective of the Native Americans and the Whites. This book shows the history was not one-sided, and both share responsibility for the hostility and deaths that resulted. Of particular interest is the chapter on the famous Adobe Walls battle. It tells the story from the Comanche side of the battle and explains the fascinating background, especially the role of Isatai, the young Comanche medicine man and prophet who, convincing the leaders of his magic and visions, created the one final effort on the part of several tribes to reclaim their buffalo hunting grounds.

Once called the Lords of the Plains, the Comanches were long portrayed as loose bands of marauding raiders who capitalized on the Spanish introduction of horses to raise their people out of primitive poverty through bison hunting and fierce warfare. In Comanche Society, Gerald Betty develops an exciting and sophisticated perspective on what he regards as the driving force of Comanche life: kinship. Betty details the kinship patterns that underlay all social organization and social behavior among the Comanches and uses the insights gained to explain the way Comanches lives and the manner in which they interacted with Europeans. Rather than a narrative history of the Comanches, this account presents analyses of the formation of clans and how they functioned across wide areas to produce cooperation and alliances: of hierarchy based in family and generational relationships; and of ancestor worship and related religious ceremonies as the basis for social solidarity. Betty then considers a number of aspects of Comanche life--pastoralism, migration and nomadism, economics and trade, warfare and violence--and how these developed along kinship lines. Betty describes in detail the Comanche horse culture as it was observed by the Spaniards and the Indian adaptation of Iberian practices. This cutting-edge history draws on original research in extensive primary documents providing an interpretive gaze into the culture of eighteenth--and nineteenth-century Comanche life.

The rich religious beliefs and ceremonials of the Pueblo Indians of Arizona and New Mexico were first synthesized and compared by ethnologist Elsie Clews Parsons. Prodigious research and a quarter-century of fieldwork went into her 1939 encyclopedic two-volume work, Pueblo Indian Religion. The author gives an integrated picture of the complex religious and social life in the pueblos, including Zuni, Acoma, Laguna, Taos, Isleta, Sandia, Jemez, Cochiti, Santa Clara, San Felipe, Santa Domingo, San Juan, and the Hopi villages. In volume I she discusses shelter, social structure, land tenure, customs, and popular beliefs. Parsons also describes spirits, cosmic notions, and a wide range of rituals. The cohesion of spiritual and material aspects of Pueblo culture is also apparent in volume II, which presents an extensive body of solstice, installation, initiation, war, weather, curing, kachina, and planting and harvesting ceremonies, as well as games, animal dances, and offerings to the dead. A review of Pueblo ceremonies from town to town considers variations and borrowings. Today, a half century after its original publication, Pueblo Indian Religion remains central to studies of Pueblo religious life.
