Maria Stewart is believed by many to have been the first American woman of any race to give public political speeches. In Word, Like Fire, Valerie C. Cooper argues that the religious, political, and social threads of Maria Stewart's thought are tightly interwoven, such that focusing narrowly on any one aspect would be to misunderstand her rhetoric. Cooper demonstrates how a certain kind of biblical interpretation can be a Rosetta Stone for understanding various areas of African American life and thought that still resonate today.

To the unstudied eye, Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. Erasmo Leiva here acts as our guide, showing Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical--astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the non-technical reader. The tone is very muchÊgustate et videte, quoniam suavis est DominusÊ[taste and see how good the Lord is]-as it is "friend, come up higher!". The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart/the light of the divine Word. Leiva points to Matthew's gospel as being deeply ecclesial because it is first Christological. He comments on the Greek text, demonstrating to the reader nuances in the text that defy translation into English without serious revision of the text. Leiva uses linguistic analysis to aid the non-Greek reader with the literal meaning of the text; numerous quotes from the Fathers and the liturgy of the church demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.

To the unstudied eye, St. Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. In his second volume of meditations on Matthew (chapters 12-18), Erasmo Leiva shows Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical--astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent, but rich with meaning. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the lay reader. The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart/the light of the divine Word. Leiva comments on the Greek text, demonstrating nuances in the text that defy translation. To the unstudied eye, St. Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. In his fourth and final volume of meditations on Matthew (chapters 26-28), Erasmo Leiva continues to show Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical-astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent, but rich with meaning. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the lay reader. The tone is very much of "taste and see how good the Lord is" and an invitation of "friend, come up higher!" The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart and the light of the divine Word, and aims at prayer as the final result of a fruitful encounter with the Word of God. Leiva comments on the Greek text, demonstrating nuances in the text that defy translation. He uses numerous quotes from the Fathers and the Liturgy of the Church to demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus. Points of Interest • Long awaited final volume in a widely beloved and deeply rich series of scripture study and meditation • Scholarly but eminently approachable by the lay reader • Theological reflection that vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus • Aims at prayer as the final result of a fruitful encounter with the Word of God

From Gods mouth to the hearts of his people - this is the function of the Bible and is the reason it is called the Word of God. The Bible applied to the heart by the Holy Spirit is the chief means by which men are built up and established in the faith, after their conversion. It is able to cleanse them, sanctify them, to instruct them in righteousness, and to furnish them thoroughly for all good works (2 Tim. 3:1617) (J. C. Ryle. After many years of anger against God, the author was wonderfully restored by the Lord to himself and laid the burden of this ministry on his heart. Every week for the past fourteen years, TFTWs (Thoughts from the Word) have been sent via the Internet to Gods people throughout the world. Many similar thoughts may be found at www.onhisshoulders.com. The thoughts contained in this volume are published with the sincere prayer that God will use them to refresh and encourage the souls of his people. It is understood that the majority of Earth's populace entertain false religion. People acceptable and pleasing to God have always been a small minority. When that small minority loses their way and fails to represent truth but instead emits a false light, God in his mercy is forced to administer judgment. It is the hope of the author to awaken and set free the meek and innocent ones that are trapped and deceived by the so called Christian church today and all prisoners of every false religion that have an ear to hear and a heart to receive.
