Teacher education programs are charged with educating teachers to teach all students - preparing them to teach multiethnic, multiracial, multilingual, and differently-abled students in an increasingly global, inter-dependent world. This book takes as its starting point the assumption that pre-service teacher candidates, primarily white and middle-class, come to college to pursue a teaching degree having little if any experience of a social nature with persons not like themselves. Rooted in areas of theory and practice and based around the «Schools and Society» and «Culturally Relevant Teaching» courses required by the Teacher Education Program social justice conceptual framework, «How Do We Know They Know?» is a conversation about ways to assess these pre-service teachers' growth and movement, as they progress from naiveté to awareness about the realities of culture in schools.

Riveting, soulful, and courageously told, From My Mother is a meditation on grief, family, genetic disease and also a deeply personal account of the narrator's coming-of-age amid medical crisis and tragedy to carry on the lessons from her mother to raise her young son. A story of loss on many levels, From My Mother is a moving book that transforms suffering into art and inspiration. Leech weaves a beautiful tapestry of the enduring mysteries of what dormant harbingers of genetic disease may lurk within, the surprising possibilities in loss, and the deep resilience of the human spirit as the body weakens. From My Mother leaves the reader pondering the value of genetic testing, the beauty in a disease easy to accept as genetic fault, and the heart wrenching question of when life should be sustained by machine or ended by choice.

Ray should have died on three separate occasions when he was in the ICU. But sheer tenacity, an almost delusional belief that COVID would not kill him, and the prayers of family and friends kept Ray alive for five weeks throughout his near-fatal COVID ordeal. Ray emerged from the hospital suffused with a renewed joy for, and love of, life. He set out in his recovery to regain his former vigor and complete the memoir he had been writing for years. This memoir is more than about surviving COVID. It is the story of how one man came to realize how blessed he has been throughout his life. It is the story of an unshakeable faith in God despite the setbacks, dangers, and trauma that life brings. Far from the Cliff is one man’s prayer of thanksgiving for the beauty, love, and happiness that can be ours, even as we face endless trials, an uncertain future, and our own looming mortality.

On the way to Nebraska in 1986 my life was changed forever in the blink of an eye when the tour bus on which I was traveling slammed into an 18-wheel tanker. After the accident and during my recovery my sister was keeping a journal, which she told me was to help me write my book. From time to time through the years I thought about that book, especially when I would share my story at churches or one-on-one and people would say, "You need to write a book" However, my second thought would always be, "Who would ever want to read about me" and I would shove the idea back to the corner of my mind where it had been hanging out for years. Finally a few years ago after being introduced to a word processor, I sat down and began to write my story. The computer made the writing part easy enough, but telling the story was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It took weeks and weeks of reading and rereading my sister's journal and digging up memories deeply buried, which were painful to review. I won't say it was exactly a labor of love, but I am glad I finally did it. It is my prayer that people will be encouraged and inspired by reading how God has brought me through it all. If I seem courageous or special in any way it is because of Him.

Prelude to Hemlock is a black comedy that follows the fortunes of the young narrator, Jeffrey Edwards. A contrarian by nature and libertine by choice, Jeff is charming, caustic, fiercely intelligent...and fiercely self-destructive. Jeff writes lyrics for his sister Kim, a gifted rock musician, and as Kim's musical star rises, the siblings become entangled in events both comic and appalling. Along the way, Jeff contends with his pill-popping mother; his breezy and scheming father; and his dope-smoking friend, Tall Patty. As these characters intertwine and collide, Kim's career approaches the bright brink of success--even as she and Jeff approach the darkest brink of disaster. Jeff understands that what the righteous really dread is a world with no sinners, but he and Kim cannot quite grasp the cost of truly living as they please. This book is also in print.
